◾️I have a BIG career goal, where to start?
2 min test to understand if your current career plan will work
Let’s face it: occasional random moves do not work in life and in career too.
While making big or, most notably, daily decisions, it is crucial to keep in mind your aspirations, goals, and plans that will lead you to the right moves toward your dream career. With a massive amount of opportunities, it is hard to keep focus and be persistent in moving towards aspirations.
And no one teaches us why and how to create a development plan!
A plan helps to say yes to opportunities and, more importantly, what to say no.
For example, involving in educational programs may not be the right decision, especially if they are free. Keep in mind: they are not. It costs your attention and time and may not necessarily lead to the right outcome with the highest ROI (return on investment) of your time.
🚦 Below are the critical elements of a plan.
☑️ Let's test how many points do you have!
2 points. Personal. Leads to your true dream career, not to popular or highly appreciated roles. You feel it is YOUR goal. If you love gardening, aim to be a highly professional gardener, avoid starting a career in IT!
1 point. Exciting. Make you feel excitement instead of demotivation. Career goals are true to your dreams, a little bit unclear about achieving, but exciting!
3 points. Tailored. Tailored to your skills, experience, and limits. You are familiar with what motivates you, what do you like, what are your strong sides are. What fits a computer science degree male data scientist in Texas would not fit a single mum teacher in the UK.
2 points. Actionable. It contains clear steps, including completing projects, changing roles, or mastering skills with education.
3 points. Specific. Has timeline, number goals, dates, courses, or skills.
2 points. Supportive. Experienced people guide you through. Mentors, coaches, professors are there to help you overcome the most challenging steps. Involves you into a professional network.
1 point. Evaluated. Takes into consideration current market situation. You did research and talked with several professionals in your field.
4 points. Reviewed. Has a cycle of granular planning, reviews (monthly and weekly) and changes.
⚠️Everything less than 14 points (out of 18) seeks improvement.
Good news: it is more than doable!
